It would be cool to be more easily able to hack with the looking glass portrait. One way of doing that could be to incorporate an usb-serial adapter to give access to the serial console of the raspberry pi. Since there already is a USB-hub in the looking glass it should be fairly straightforward to incorporate.

Is it possible to control (the edge lighting) via an API? Or is the hardware for that independent of the Pi?

My house is quite dusty and I find that the device collects dust inside the display's cavity. I understand that adding a front panel would have caused issues with reflections/refractions. However, it would be nice if there was a cover that could be placed over the device when not in use.
