Just a suggestion to the developers that instead of blurring the depth map image, it might be better to "oversample" the depth map in the displacement shader. This would be similar to applying a gaussian blur but at the displacement layer. The end result would still soften the transition edges, but it could execute on the GPU and a slider could easily be added similar to "depthiness". Maybe this slider would be called something like "softness".
Anyway, I found a good gaussian shader for Unity that could be adapted here:
